How To Stop Receiving Auto DMs (Direct Messages) On Twitter

Unless you have followed zero people, you’ve probably received an Auto DM on Twitter.  It usually is a message of someone trying to be funny, and it probably includes a URL to something to make them money. (And they usually have the phrase “Nice to Tweet you!” on there…ARRRRGHHHHH!).  If you had followed the Niche Titans (@nichetitans) before, you may have received one, though we have stopped auto-DMs all together.

Well, as you follow more and more people, getting auto-DMs will be extremely annoying, sometimes flooding out legitimate DMs you may get from people.

Now you can pretty much stop auto-DMs all together in Twitter… here’s how:

We’re going to go to the top 2 places that allow people to send auto-DMs to their new followers and opt out.

  1. Go to @optmeout‘s Twitter page. (http://twitter.com/optmeout)
  2. Follow @optmeout and wait for them to follow you back (few minutes).
  3. After they follow you, send @optmeout a Direct Message (it can say anything).
  4. Then you can unfollow @optmeout.

Now, anyone who uses TweetLater to send their auto-DMs, will not send one to you anymore.

Now, we have one more place to opt-out… SocialToo.

  1. Go to http://socialtoo.com.
  2. Click “Create Account to Auto Follow & More!”
  3. Create an account.
  4. Once you’ve created an account and logged in, click the “Preferences” tab in the upper right.
  5. Check where it says “NEW! Turn off automatic Direct Messages from SocialToo and other services?”.
  6. Uncheck any other things you don’t want to do/have done.
  7. Scroll down and click “Submit.”

That’s all you have to do.  Probably 99% of the auto-DMs on Twitter you would have received, you will no longer receive!

Enjoy!

  1. Thanks for the shout out! :)

http://socialtoo.com just announced that they will no longer use auto DM! woo hoo!

    Here’s irony…

[sarcasm] I just decided to follow your blog, but what do I get?

I get an “AUTO DM” message (aka autoresponse) from you
    in my mail box!

This could drown out other personal mail that I want to
    read. How dare you?

To top it off you include a link, and I’m pretty sure you’re
a marketer, who wants to make money by helping me.

    What scum!
    [end sarcasm]

This is the exact thing you’re complaining about on twitter,
but as a smart marketer, you use autoresponse in your email,
because it would simply take too long to “welcome” each new
subscriber you get via email, so you send

You also include a link, as well as a description of the content
we can expect to receive as readers.

This is the exact same thing an auto dm does on twitter, and
again, the only people who should have a problem with it are
those that follow 100 people a day for some reason – and
    get 100 auto-dm replies.

Your automated email in my inbox in no way offended me, because
I just told you I was interested in you and what you have to
    offer when I subscribed!

    Again…IMHO. :-)

    Talk soon!

I have a better idea – just unfollow everyone who sends you a DM link to their get rich quick scam. If I follow you, I already clicked on your linkage so there’s no need to send it in a DM!! I seriously have no idea why people think that is necessary. I wonder if there are stats for click-thru rates on auto DM spam?

I dunno. I understand why the more popular among us (not me lol) might feel the need to have auto DM welcome messages. I think for a lot of people they are just trying to be friendly. Nothing wrong with that!

That said, for some reason bot messages tend to offend me a bit – even if they don’t contain spam. I’d honestly rather have you ignore me. THAT I get. THAT is real. It makes YOU real. Just like ME!! I like real. I’m a real person and so I preferred to be conversed with in a “real” way or not at all tyvm.

Wanna connect? Respond to something I say next time you happen to catch me in your stream – I don’t care if it takes months. I find that quite a bit more “welcoming” – AND it makes you human. I like humans. Not bots.

    Thanks for the info!

Auto DM will kill Twitter. So stopping it is a good idea.

  5. Darren says:

Thanks for the gr8t tip do disable auto dm’s
I actually like reading real dm’s but get very annoyed when you get spam dm’s from the bots
in my opinion all apps should have this feature to disable auto dm’s

Thanks for the great article, it’s very useful info for those of us who are annoyed by Auto DM’s. Like some of the other readers I also like to get real DM’s. I manually greet followers and often use a pre-written reply, but do my best to customize and personalize it. It’s a slow proposition to get to everyone but with persistence it can be done.
