How to Get More Readers for Your Blog

When I mention blog readers I mean visitors who become active readers and/or RSS feed subscribers. These are visitors who read your content on a regular basis and enjoy what you have to offer. Attracting visitors and creating loyal readers can be two completely different things.

Generating the right kind of traffic is very important when you’re trying to get more readers for your blog. Make sure you’re optimizing your site for keywords or keyword phrases that direct to real content that your target audience will benefit from or enjoy. Give your readers what’s in their best interest and what will actually help them with whatever it is they are trying to accomplish.

I’ve recently seen a lot of forum posts with people asking how to get more readers for their blog and generate return visitors. The answer is simple and I can’t repeat this enough. Blogging is a community and one of the greatest ways to generate blog readers is by commenting on similar blogs or participating in group discussions on related forums.

For example, your blog is all about sports cars and you want to attract readers interested in sports cars.

Blogs:

1. Find blogs relating to or discussing sports cars
2. Register for that blog
3. Read the blog articles and provide good solid comments frequently
- Add a link to your blog every time you comment
- This is also a great way to build backlinks for your blog

Forums:

1. Find forums discussing sports cars or containing your target audience (ie: young males)
2. Register on the forum
3. Actively participate in discussions
- Add a link to your blog in your signature, it will show up every time you post or reply
- If other members respect what you have to say they’ll most likely visit the links in your signature

Remember a little participation goes a long way!

Another key point, Ryan, that I think is missing, is to have good content ON your blog. A lot of people think that rehashing the same old content that’s available on a zillion other blogs or on eZineArticles.com is “good enough” for their blog readers. Or, worse yet, a very common theme, transparent reviews of products that they’re getting affiliate revenues for.

If you don’t have something worthy of coming back for, people will stop going, and will stop trying to look for a hint of value.

Getting repeat blog-readers is a multi-step process, just like direct mail. Get them to open the envelope, get them to read, get them to take action. For blogging it’s: get them to the site, get them to read an article, get them to come back.

@Daiv … Yah, content is a big piece in a large puzzle. Putting all of the pieces together maximizes the chances of getting more visitors to your blog.

Content is everything. That is the hardest part about blogging (for me). Without good content, all other efforts are useless.

You are so right about having people check out forum and blog communities. There are a lot of people within those communities that have lots of questions and if you can provide answers it will have them seeing you as an expert. Which could lead to them wanting to check out your site.

I agree that having good content is very important, but that does not garentee that you will attract more readers. Thanks for the tips …I am going to try them out right now.

Very good points. Yes. Content is king. But how it is presented is the key issue. Even quality content presented in a difficult to read unattractive manner will drive accidental viewers away.

twiiter – I am making a go of this new media – but for the life of me have got no idea how its really going to convert to getting hits on my website – really inane contents and its so time consuming – I feel id be better served with at least doing a email press release. Just started and up to 400+ followers but jeeeeez…. its time consuming with zip payoff it seems…………

  9. I’m a firm believer that the sales person of today is also a publisher. Good writing, engaging copy, and updated information is integral to 1.) being a leader on the subject matter and 2.) increasing visitors to your site. Our company is currently working on launching a blog site, so thanks for the information. It takes a lot of man hours to search the Internet and post on other blogs, but it may be worth the effort…
