How to Choose your Niche Market
This tutorial will help you choose your niche and assist you in keyword selection.
Choosing your Niche can be one of the most important things you do when you try to conquer a market.
Step 1:
Define your general market.
For this example we’re going to use “hair care”
So my goal is to target visitors looking to learn about hair care, hair care products, hair care methods, and hair care tools. I’m looking to generate traffic targeted towards hair care in general.
Step 2:
Check your competition.
To do this I will Google “hair care” and see what sites appear in search engine rankings for this keyword.

This is your primary competition for hair care.
Step 3:
Do a keyword traffic analysis.
This will show you approximately how many searches Google receives per month for this exact keyword and it’ll also suggest related keywords.

Hair Care: 246,000 per month
This is a general market and not a niche market. A niche market is a part of the market with less competition that will allow you to gain a market share of the general market.
Make sure you set the filter to EXACT so you receive only the actual estimated amount of searches per month. This tool was originally created to help you estimate Google Adwords advertising traffic but it is used for keyword selection as well.
Step 4:
Select a Niche Market.
Once you’ve defined your general market and researched related keywords you are able to determine niches in the market that you can now target.
14,800 – Hair Care Products
14,800 – Black Hair Care
12,100 – Natural Hair Care
3,600 – African American Hair Care
2,900 – Natural Hair Care Products
These are examples of a niche market within the general market of “hair care”.
Once you’ve chosen a niche market you can choose a domain. For example, we’ll use black hair care and african american hair care as they are essentially the same thing.
Step 5:
Choose a keyword rich domain.
This will allow you to rank easier in search engine rankings as you primary keyword will be part of your domain name.
To check domain name availability I use http://www.bustaname.com because it’s fast and easy.
You can type in a domain name you want to use and it’ll instantly check .com, .net and .org for you.
I tried a couple variations and since obvious domain names were taken like blackhaircare.com I decided to go ahead and go with a combination of the two target keywords.
I went with africanamericanblackhaircare.com.
This way I am able to target black hair care and african american hair care in the same domain name.
14,800 – Black Hair Care
3,600 – African American Hair Care
Good luck on choosing your niche market! Feel free to comment and I’ll help you out the best I can..
